Champions SOGI Education, (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity)
Unitarian Universalist Liam Patterson-Morris is an elementary school teacher, currently teaching students aged 11-13, in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Liam will be speaking about the values and the success of the BC schools’ SOGI 123 resources, (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, easy as 1, 2, 3). These resources help students explore the topic of human rights throughout the curriculum and school activities. The students have opportunities to learn what it means to value diversity and to respect differences. They learn to respond effectively to hateful discrimination, and to safely share their questions about their own identity. These resources also support school communities in developing policies to protect and celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ youth.
Liam sees the national debate around SOGI exploration program as an opportunity coming about at “a unique moment in history”.
