The Plant Based Treaty is a grassroots initiative creating bottom-up pressure for the negotiation of a global Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the UNFCCC Paris Agreement. Modeled on the Fossil Fuel Treaty, the Plant Based Treaty aims to put food systems at the forefront of combating the climate crisis to halt the widespread degradation of critical ecosystems caused by animal agriculture and to promote a shift towards healthier, sustainable plant-based diets. Many congregations, organizations and cities (i.e. Amsterdam, Edinburg) have signed up and endorsed the treaty. Individuals can also sign up.
Anita Krajnc is Executive Director of the Animal Save Movement, a worldwide network of Save groups bearing witness to farmed animals and promoting veganism and love-based, grassroots activism and global campaign coordinator of the Plant Based Treaty. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Toronto and is a staunch follower of Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi and Cesar Chavez. Anita has also been an assistant professor at Queen’s University (Ontario) and has published extensively on social movements and environmental politics in peer-reviewed journals and is co-author of “The Secret Life of Pigs: Stories of Compassion and the Animal Save Movement” (Lantern).
